Help! I’m not moving!

A sea of swimmers on floatation devices. No room to move

Do you feel like you’re doing all of the things everyone tells you you should be doing but you’re not getting anywhere? Maybe you feel like a cat running up a slide when trying to achieve our goals?

Chances are you’re writing blogs, posting in Facebook groups, maybe even doing Facebook lives, and hopefully, you’re also building an email list. But sometimes it can feel like you’re putting in all of this effort with little to no rewards.

I know how you feel. I’ve been there, and you know what I realised. It takes time.

Particularly when you’re first starting out you have to build your audience. You’re starting from scratch and that means you’re starting with no knowledge of what you should be doing and no audience to sell to.

“Enjoy the Journey!”

You’re probably absorbing everything you can about business, marketing, content creation, social media, building websites, networking and trying to do all the things.

Building a business is like a marathon, not a sprint.

There is no such thing as an ‘overnight success story’.

Everyone that has ever become successful in their field had put lots of hard work, determination, blood, sweat and tears into getting to where they are. Then they get there and make it look easy. They’ve probably even made a tonne of mistakes along the way, some that they even regret.

Think about it this way. How long does it take to get a degree? How many years of study before you can say you’re qualified?

When I finished uni I was one of those blindsided students that thought that piece of paper was going to give me all the opportunities, and then I realised I hadn’t even started.

I came out with an Arts degree and got High Distinctions in Art History and Pop Culture – none of which has helped me to build a successful business!

Everything I’ve learnt about marketing, business, finance, sales, customer service and everything else that goes into running a business I learnt on the ground – just like you.

There were some things like posting consistently on social media that I went into kicking and screaming because who’s got the time!?

But I made the time and stuck with it with regular, consistent action and you know what? Eventually, that snowball started to pick up more snow. It started to roll a little faster. I started getting a lot more enquiries and referrals and getting more and more paying clients.

Lady holding a snowball in front of her face.

If you create a solid foundation with an organic strategy of consistent action you will start to see results. This will eventually lead to being able to pay to have either someone do it for you or a paid ad strategy that will give you more time.

You either have time or you have money but you very rarely have both.

So where are you right now?

Do you have the time to dedicate to creating an organic strategy using online and offline methods to bring in those clients like a big spiderweb? Or do you have more money than time and can afford to pay to get those leads. Because the real thing here is that without marketing you don’t have a business.

By creating a simple strategy you can carve out moments of your day and maximise your results without feeling like you’re wasting precious time getting stuck in the rabbit hole of Facebook!

So my top tip for today is to create a strategy and create consistent daily action and your hard efforts will start to reap the rewards!

This is something I teach my students in Business Brains for Creative Entrepreneurs.

The Value of a Customer

Have you ever stopped to think about the actual lifetime value of a customer? It doesn’t just necessarily mean that one customer, but everyone that customer has also sent your way whether that’s through face to face referrals, testimonials or simply checking in on socials.

When you are calculating the cost of acquisition of a customer these are all factors that you need to consider and the reason why the longer you’ve been in business the easier it gets.

Say you were to do a promotion. You give a first-time customer a 20% discount. Just to make it easy, let’s say the total is $100 and they’ve saved $20. You’ve made $80, which should cover your expenses and advertising costs to aquire that customer. Hopefully there’s a little profit as well.

Depending on your business that customer might come back a few more times. They tell their friends and some of them use your services. They leave a review which has sparked someone else to use you. A couple of those people have ‘checked in’ to your business on socials and have brought your business in front of more people that didn’t know you existed.

Now how many people are aware of and have used your business from that 20% discount?

Pretty powerful huh?

Check out this video on how I use promotions in my business….

What I learnt from a 7 year old.

The other day I held a workshop in my studio and a lot of things that kept coming up were the blocks we put on ourselves.

A lot of times we think

‘I can’t do this until….’

‘When I achieve this, then…’

‘I can’t charge that because…’

We make excuses up for ourselves about why we haven’t achieved the greatness we want for ourselves.

Maybe you haven’t got a website yet, or you feel like you need a piece of software or equipment.

One of the things that came up while we were chatting was why I had been putting off running my networking events in my studio. It’s the perfect space and yet I felt like I didn’t have enough chairs or a big enough screen. Then I realised Ikea has chairs for $7. That’s what was holding me back – $7 can you believe it!? Crazy hey!

So I’m doing it! I’m not letting my stupid blocks get in the way anymore!

I recently realised that I was over complicating things with sales funnels and systems and putting on the ‘when i have this then’ hat. I’ve since realised you can strip it right back and simplify everything and still deliver a quality, high end product!

Ever heard the saying ‘KISS – Keep It Simple Stupid!’

You all know I love my systems and automations, but sometimes it can be a juggle between where you are right now and where you want to be, and you’ve just got to get creative and figure out the how.

Which brings me back to what I learnt from a 7 year old. That 7 year old being my daughter. Last week my kids had under 8’s day at school, which is where they have a bunch of activities to try and complete by the end of the day.

My daughter, Skylar was making a magic carpet in the India pavilion and the teacher was having conniptions because she wasn’t following the rules. They had some beautifully patterned craft paper that they were supposed to cut pieces out of to decorate a brown piece of paper which they had attached tassels to the ends to make the carpet. Skylar didn’t like the brown paper so she created a carpet twice the size out of the other paper and then cut the brown paper with the tassels in half and attached it to each end. I had to laugh because she is super creative like her mumma and you can’t put her creativity in a box which is something I love about her and will continue to nurture.

So the lesson for today is…

You don’t need to be put in a box. You don’t need to do what everyone else is doing.

Get creative and do it your way!

Because your greatness is only inhibited by your own blocks.

Keep Shining Bright and Achieving Greatness as only you can!

What’s Holding You Back?

Self doubt has got to be the number one thing standing between you and success!

Our lizard brains are programmed to go into fight or flight mode when something gets scary and running your own business can be scary! You’ve got to learn new things, test them out, put yourself out there and what happens when everything doesn’t go to plan? Do you fall flat on your face and ugly cry in the bathroom?

Guess what! It happens to the best of us! But that’s not any reason to give up on yourself and your dream? Is it?

Our limiting beliefs can be created by our own internal dialogue as well as the blueprint that’s been ingrained in us as we grow up. They can also be the result of external pressures and ideologies.

You will only be able to live up to your greatest expectation of yourself so live large!

Set yourself some BHAGS (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) – these are the ones that seem out of this world but they are totally not impossible. It might be to make a million dollars, buy your Dream Home or work 2 days a week. None of these goals are impossible to achieve, but they may feel it from where you are sitting right now.

By visualising yourself as having those things you are programming your brain to think of these goals as ‘normal’ ambitions making you more likely to achieve them!

Where focus goes energy flows!

Start with the big picture and set consistent daily achievable steps to get there.

The number one thing you need to run a successful business

Are you struggling to run a successful business?

If you feel like you’re swimming in a sea of sameness and trying to figure out how to stand out from the crowd, you may be missing this.

Every market is saturated – it’s a fact. It is extremely difficult to stand out from the crowd when there are 101 people out there doing the same things as you.

So how do you stand out from the crowd?

Connection and Authenticity.

Our daily lives are saturated with information and sales pitches. We have become immune to the messaging.

The number one way to stand out to is make an authentic connection with your audience so that they know, like and trust you.

I don’t know about you but I get lots of friend requests daily from people reaching out to me on Facebook. Most of them I don’t know who they are, but I can see that we have some sort of connection, whether it’s friends, same town, same school etc.

If you want people to start listening to you, you first need to create a connection. Let them know about you and also find out about them. Find out why they reached out to you in the first place.

Even in the dating world we are so void of connection swiping our way through the dating fish pond, the number one thing we crave as humans is that human connection!

It used to be that we needed to be seen 5 times before someone would buy from us. This is now stated as 22. Yes, that’s right! 22 times. How are you showing up and creating a deeper connection with your ideal clients?

Ideally you want to be doing video and showing up in real life. That’s the fastest way to create that know, like, trust factor and build a successful business.

Repurpose your content as much as possible. For instance this blog post was created from a Facebook Live I did today. I’ve uploaded it to Youtube, shared on different social media, created a blog post and possibly emailed it out to you as well.

If creating content is something you struggle with be sure to book in a free 30 minute call with me to see if it’s something I can help you with.

Being Authentically You in Business – What Does That Even Mean?

Being your authentic self – what does that even mean?
You have many different sides to your personality – multi faceted like a diamond. Who you are with your friends on a night out is a different person to who you are at a family dinner, it’s still the authentic you, just a slightly different version.
When we are trying to attract our ideal clients we need to understand who they are and the version of you they will relate to. If you’re offering a high end experience you will want to dress appropriately and act appropriately. If you swear like a trooper you probably won’t attract anyone that’s offended by your language. You need to ask yourself do I want to attract or repel these types of people.
Is it important that you show your audience that you are a religious person, a family person or that you get to travel to lots of exotic locations? What will YOUR ideal clients resonate with?
Be yourself – just the shiny, successful version of you. If you constantly complain on social media that life is hard and business is hard, customers will keep their distance not wanting to take on your issues. Instead if you share how you were vulnerable but you stayed positive and overcame your problem, or perhaps you are still working through it – your audience will be attracted to your positivity because they feel like they know you, they like you and they can trust you.
You need to own your story – don’t hide behind it. Do you have a tragic circumstance, a recurring theme or an A-ha moment that was pivotal in you becoming the person you are today. It is a part of your journey. Share your story and watch your ideal client empathise with you and be attracted to what you have to offer.
You don’t need to pretend to be someone you’re not when you show up as an entrepreneur. Although you may need to project your mindset into the super successful person you see yourself becoming – not for your audiences sake but for your own!

Business brains for creatives

Are you a struggling creative?
Do you create beautiful work but struggle with the business aspects of running your business? I used to be that person too. The truth is to be successful as a creative you need to be just as good if not better at the business side of your creative gig. You need to be able to sell your work by working on people’s psychology, you need to be a marketing guru and you need to know your numbers so you can actually pay yourself and not just be a struggling artist for the rest of your life!
Here are my top tips for creating a successful creative biz!
  1. Know your numbers! At the end of the day if you want to make a full time career from your creative skills, you need to know your margins and how much you want to earn for the year. To work this out you need to work backwards. How much does your business cost you to run each year including all of your marketing to get your clients for the year. Work out how much you want to take home. Divide this by how many clients you want to work with (make sure it’s reasonable so you don’t burn out!) Add in your holiday time. Now this can all be a bit daunting once you add it all up you’ll be surprised to see how much you’re actually paying yourself an hour. Do yourself a favour and charge accordingly. If you’re still building your portfolio make sure you have a plan moving forward so you’re not shooting yourself in the foot! Develop your skills then raise your prices every 6 months to a year until you’re where you want to be.
  1. Create a tribe of raving fans! Your tribe will probably start off as friends and family as you practice your skills, but as you build your portfolio you’ll have more clients and friends in the industry referring you. Make sure you nurture these relationships. These are your free leads and where you’re best clients will come from.
  1. Become the public face of your business. As creatives we tend to hide behind our work.  Your work can be amazing but if people don’t know who you are no-one will hire you. Get out there and network. Collaborate with other businesses. Build those relationships in person and create another referral stream. Remember people buy from people they know, like and trust.
  1. Map out your client workflow. You need to have a clear process of how you will work with each client so you can be working on multiple jobs and know exactly where you’re up to with each client. When you’re first getting started I suggest you have a spreadsheet that tells you where you are up to with each client and put important dates like deadlines into your calendar. You can use google sheets online which will give you access no matter where you and as you grow you can give access to others if you want to start outsourcing some of these tasks to a VA, assistant or producer. Once you get established get yourself a CRM (customer relationship manager). This is an invaluable way to automate emails, invoices, contracts and workflow stages and will ensure you can stay in touch with your clients no matter where you are. I use studio ninja – (Use this promo code: LE100976Y and get $5 off your monthly subscription!)
The secret to building your business is in automation!
  1. Outsource. As you start to grow you will run out of hours in the day to do it all yourself. Outsource the things you hate or are the most time consuming, like your accounting, admin and editing work. The sooner you can outsource, the faster your business will grow so you can focus on the important aspects of growing your business!
  1. Commit yourself to learning. As a small business owner we are always learning and in today’s fast paced environment things are always changing. We have to be flexible and change with the times if we don’t want to get left behind (think Kodak and Dick Smith!) Make time in your schedule to listen or watch learning tools in your industry or about business in general. If you can afford it invest in a mentor. Having a mentor is an invaluable tool as they can give you expert advice and become your accountability partner ensuring you are growing your business. It’s great to get an outsiders viewpoint sometimes.
If you follow these 6 steps it will ensure your business is set up to grow without you burning out and loosing the passion for doing what you love!
