A couple of our guests so far have touched on repurposing content so I thought I’d better do an episode on this as I know it’s what a lot of my clients struggle with!
Let’s start by addressing ‘what is content and why do we need it’
Content comes in many forms and you’re probably doing it without even realising it.
It can be posting on social media, doing videos, writing blogs and emails, a Youtube channel or a podcast. The purpose of content is to build know, like and trust with your audience. By sharing valuable information, tips, tricks, how to’s whatever that looks like you are building a trust relationship with your audience.
The problem most entrepreneurs face is - What do I share? And I don’t have time…..
So let’s dive into the first part - ‘What do I share?’
Firstly share more about you!
Your audience wants to see that you’re a real person and whatever makes you relatable to them is what is going to have them working with you over someone else. If they feel like they know you and have something in common it breaks down those barriers. The thing is you never know who’s watching and not commenting. It’s a great way to build the relationship and get referrals.
What you share and how much is completely up to you, but sharing your story, getting vulnerable, going deep - that works really well, particularly if you're a coach. People want to know that you can relate to them as much as they relate to you.
Do you love the beach? Do you have a furbaby? Do you love to work down at your local cafe sipping on a coldpress?
Telling your story can be hard and sometimes you need to work out how you can share it without affecting others around you. It takes practice and the more you do it the more you will be prepared to share. You don’t always have to go into gory details either. Be ambiguous - there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact by keeping it intriguing you’re leaving the viewer wanting to know more and they’ll keep coming back to your stuff. Remember you never know who’s watching!
The other part of this is that you might think that everyone knows what you know. Think about it this way, every book you’ve ever read, every country you’ve ever travelled, every boyfriend you’ve ever had has shaped your experience. There is no-one on this earth that has had the exact same experience as you, or even if they have they’ve interpreted it differently. Imagine you are at a family dinner and it comes up in conversation years later. Everyone is going to remember that night differently. Someone remembers the food, someone remembers the music, someone interpreted the conversation one way while someone else thought the opposite. Our brains process information differently and the way that you express your knowledge is different to what anyone else does.
Have you ever heard the same information multiple times from different sources and then one day it clicks. You’re like A-ha - now I get it! That’s because however that person has communicated that information has resonated with you. So don’t ever think that it’s all been done before.
The other thing is you only need to know 10% more than someone else to be seen as an expert. Say you were a horse lover and we were having a conversation about horses. To me your an expert because I literally know nothing about horses! And then you start using technical terms and you’ve completely lost me, which brings me to my next point. Remember who your audience is. Using technical jargon that’s not used in everyday language might feel normal to you but you’re going to lose those that don’t have the inside knowledge that you do.
The best way to create content is to set aside time to get creative in bulk. You can create a month's worth of content in a couple of hours or at least the outline that you can flesh out later. Sit down and do a braindump. Break everything down into small manageable pieces. Have a look at your calendar and see what you have coming up that you can use for content. It could be upcoming holidays, events, end of financial year. And then here comes the exciting bit - repurpose it.
Last week I mentioned how I’m repurposing this podcast for example. When we record the podcast at least the ones with guests, I’m not always recording video when it’s just me, we record the video as well. The video and audio feed goes on my website along with the shownotes. The video can be used on Youtube and shared on Facebook or Instagram. My guests can also share it and put the video on their websites as well if they wish. You can take some of the content and pop it into an email or a blog post. You can create mini videos and teasers, Take quotes from the video and create graphics. Something I’m also working on is how to incorporate Pinterest as a strategy. There is so much you can create to maximise your reach and prolong the half hour of content creation. Then you’ve also got the option to recycle it down the track. I can always refer back to previous episodes for instance.
You see you have to create content regardless if you want to build your expert status and break through the noise. The good news is you can be super strategic and save lots of time. You can also get strategic and get others to share your content for you!
I have a special gift for you to go with today’s episode…
I have created a super simple repurposing checklist for you to braindump your ideas and create your very own repurposing strategy!
If you want to grab a copy for yourself you’ll find the link in the shownotes at leonibolt.com/podcasts episode 7.
Just be sure to create your own copy and save in your own folder.
I hope you find this super helpful.
That’s it from me this week.
To help you on your content creation journey I have created a repurposing tool for you to plan out your content.
Be sure to make a copy and save it in your own Drive before filling it out.
